Information for Integrative Medicine Consultation with Dr Suzanne Perera
Dr Perera has been a General Practitioner for over 25 years. Over this time, she has gained extensive experience in all fields of conventional medicine. She has always been very interested in preventative medicine and sees health as optimal functioning, not just the absence of disease. She has a desire to delve deeper into chronic health conditions, to establish why illness has occurred as well as developing treatment plans to bring about wellness, not just treat a symptom.
To achieve these goals in patient care Dr Perera has undergone comprehensive additional training to become a General Practitioner that specialises in Integrative Medicine.
Integrative medicine is a whole person practice of medicine which combines the best of conventional western medicine with evidence based complementary medicine and therapies. Good health begins with good nutrition and diet, lifestyle changes, nutritional supplementation, and removal of environmental toxins are an important part of management. It is therefore holistic care which examines the interaction between the body, mind and environment.
Dr Perera has completed training with the Australian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine (ACNEM) and has been awarded Fellowship of the college, which is the highest level of training in Nutritional and Environmental Medicine that is available in Australia.
She has experience in the holistic treatment of Women’s health problems, Children’s health including ASD, ADHD and behavioural issues, hormonal issues including thyroid problems, mental health, gut health, environmental exposures, metabolic problems, fatigue, and chronic illness.
She has undertaken mental health training with the MINDD Foundation, as well as training with Biobalance Health (which involves biochemical assessment and the use of advanced complementary nutrient therapy to assist in the treatment of mental health problems).
Another major area of interest for Dr Perera is the gut microbiome and the significant impact that dysbiosis can have on human health. Assessment of the gut microbiome and improvement via diet, prebiotics, probiotics, and herbal anti microbials is a significant avenue of management. Dr Perera has completed intensive training with world microbiome expert Dr Jason Hawrelak and is a Certified Healthy Gut Practitioner from the Microbiome Restoration Center. She is able to treat SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, reflux, gut dysbiosis, parasites and functional constipation.
The microbiome is also an important avenue to explore in women’s health. Dr Perera has completed a 6 month mentorship in urogenital health and has expertise in optimising the vaginal microbiome and managing infections such as recurrent thrush, bacterial vaginosis and recurrent urinary tract infections, as well as other genital conditions.
It is important to assess the impact of the environment on health. Dr Perera has undertaken training in Building Biology and can assess the impact of environmental and household chemicals, electromagnetic fields and allergens like mould, and the contribution that these can make to ill health. Dr Perera is passionate about her role in Integrative Medicine and continues to undertake further training and mentorships to further her knowledge. She looks forward to working with you to help you achieve your optimal health and functioning.
