Frequently Asked Questions

Medicare is a government funded health subsidy scheme that contributes towards the cost of a person’s health care. Some medical practices choose to accept the Medicare rebate as full payment for their services – this is known as “bulk-billing”. However, the Medicare rebate does not cover the cost of delivering high quality health care, hence there is a “gap” or out of pocket cost for our services.
We offer concessional rates for pension card holders. Bulk-billing is only available in certain exceptional circumstances, and for over-65 year old vaccinations and chronic disease management plans.
Fees vary according to the length and complexity of the service and are payable at the time of consultation. Medicare rebates processed on your behalf and the rebated amount is deposited into the account linked with Medicare.
Medicare Item Fee Medicare Rebate Out of Pocket Fee
Standard $85.00 $42.85 $42.15
Long $140.00 $82.90 $57.10
Prolonged $200.00 $122.15 $77.85
Telehealth consultations are charged at the same level as outlined above.
You may be charged for additional procedures undertaken during the course of the consultation e.g. ECG, respiratory function test and excision fee.

Appointments can be scheduled by phoning our Reception team or booking online via HotDoc.

Due to the unpredictable nature of general practice consultations, the doctors may run behind schedule. If you are making a booking to discuss multiple problems, for a complex health issues, mental health assessments, procedures and cervical screening please ask for a long appointment. Making the right appointment for your needs will assist the doctor to run on schedule.

New patient consultations with your doctor will require more time. This allows for a complete health history to be documented.

Patients presenting with a work-related injury are liable for all costs incurred until a Work Cover claim has been approved.

Telephone consultations are charged at the same level as outlined in our consultation fees. Patients who have a valid Medicare card and who have visited our practice in the last 12 months are eligible for a rebate. Medicare rebates are processed on your behalf.

The doctors will conduct telephone consults and these can be booked online or by ringing our practice on 02 9543 2270. From time to time your doctor may indicate during this telephone consult you may require a physical examination at the practice, please contact our Reception team who will arrange this appointment for you.

When making an appointment, and again on arrival at the practice, please advise reception staff that you or your child have cold or flu symptoms or may have something contagious. We will ask that you please wear a face mask and may request you to sit in an isolated area for the health and wellbeing of our patients.
If there is a life-threatening emergency – even if you are not certain – always call 000. Otherwise, telephone us on 02 9543 2270 and you will be advised of the best course of action.
A fee will be charged for non-attendance of appointments. This will be $45 for an appointment that has been booked but not attended. Extenuating circumstances will always be taken into account.
Where blood tests or other investigations have been ordered, you will generally need to make a follow-up appointment to discuss the results. Our SMS recall system will send you a text message requesting a “non-urgent appointment”. If the doctor is concerned about your results, the staff at Alfords Point Medical Practice will contact you to make an appointment. A fee is payable for follow up appointments.
Preventive care is important because it helps detect health problems early, when they are easier and more effective to treat.
